Virtualization CMDB

The Reflex Virtualization Management Center platform was purpose-built for the virtual infrastructure to take advantage of the benefits of virtualization. The enabling technologies that support Reflex's VMC platform are designed to provide tight integration, correlation and flexibility for customers managing and securing their virtual data centers.

Design

A Configuration Management Database is very useful in IT environments by providing a single point of reference for the configuration of information systems. The CMDB allows the comingling of generic data and relationships between different types of systems that are integrated into the CMDB through Management Data Repositories (MDRs). Therefore, multiple applications can access the CMDB and integrate together. To provide the generic mapping between configuration items, many CMDB systems employ a generic database structure and require procedural application programming logic to correlate certain concepts together.

Reflex has developed a different and innovative type of Configuration Management Database that is designed specifically for virtualization. Rather than using a completely generic database structure, Reflex stores configuration data in native form across different types of information systems and performs generic mapping of data of application logic using a flexible language called Virtualization Query Language (VQL).

The VQL language is at the heart of the virtualization CMDB and provides a unified type system that can map to completely different data within the IT environment. For example, a Windows event log message can immediately refer to the machine, hypervisor, network, storage, application, user, and billing system in which that the event occurred in context with detailed native data about each system without any external application programming. Using the VQL language as the glue between diverse systems creates a tight integration and ultimately a simpler unified interface to manage an IT environment.

Summary

Reflex VMC collects all change and configuration data and stores it in its Virtualization CMDB. The vCMDB provides specialized data that is specific to virtualization for monitoring changes, analyzing data, enforcing policies and automating processes. By combining Reflex's patent-pending virtualization query language (VQL) with the vCMDB, Reflex provides a powerful, integrated systems management platform that enables customers to effectively manage their IT environment by managing configuration profiles.
